In the 2024 Survey of College and University Presidents, Inside Higher Ed, in partnership with Hanover Research, asked college and university presidents across the country their thoughts on some of higher education’s biggest concerns, including how they feel about artificial intelligence, institutional sustainability, and hybrid work environments. The survey also uncovered what presidents think might be behind the decrease in public confidence in higher education.

16% of presidents say that senior administrators at their institution have had serious internal discussions about merging with another college or university.

50% of presidents are optimistic about artificial intelligence's impact on higher education.

66% of presidents are concerned about the state of public confidence in higher education.

Inside Higher Ed's 2023 Survey of Campus Chief Technology/Information Officers uncovered that artificial intelligence was a top concern, but that institutions were in very different stages of adopting AI technology. The survey also revealed some discrepancies between CIOs and other campus leaders when it came to digitally transforming their campus.

Nearly 4 in 10 CIOs indicate that their institution is in the advanced stages of using generative AI technology for instructional purposes and simple administrative tasks. 

73% of CIOs indicate that they personally believe digital transformation is a “high priority” or “essential” for their institution. 

93% of respondents indicated that, within the last 12 months, their institution has required multi-factor authentication for all employee accounts and updated software to improve cybersecurity practices.

In the 2023 Survey of College and University Presidents, Inside Higher Ed and Hanover Research polled 442 presidents from public, private non-profit, and for-profit institutions and found that while most presidents believed that digital transformation is necessary, many aren't yet ready to commit to some of the more dramatic changes.

Decision Guide: How Leaders of Higher Ed Institutions Should Approach Institutional Transformation - Jenzabar

In a survey of college and university presidents, Inside Higher Ed and Hanover Research learned that, for the most part, leaders are confident in their institution's financial stability. They also found that, despite persistent staffing gaps in higher education, few presidents were overly worried about staff and faculty turnover. 

Here is some other information the survey uncovered:

Despite the rise in online learning, fewer than 1 in 5 presidents said they were likely to reduce their campuses physical footprint. 

More than 70% of campus leaders who expect their institutions to be less financially stable cite high labor costs and inflation as the reasons why.

52% of respondents said they have instituted more flexible work policies.

Presidents attribute the increased demand for student mental health services to declining student resilience, among other things.

A new survey of higher education leaders developed by University Business and Jenzabar found that many colleges and universities are urgently in need of digital transformation, which is vital to improving student experiences, optimizing decision-making, and ensuring overall institutional sustainability. More than 200 higher education leaders participated in the survey, with a variety of job titles and from a wide diversity of sizes and types of institutions around the country. 

Some of the findings in the survey include:

29% said undergoing modernization and/or digital transformation is incredibly urgent.

54% said improving student recruitment, enrollment, and retention are the most important outcomes for IT systems like the SIS and ERP.

27% said enhanced agility and scalability was the most valuable benefit of leveraging cloud-based systems.

Roughly two-thirds of CIOs believe that their institution has not set specific digital transformation goals.

In our newest online survey of roughly 150 college administrators nationwide, we found that schools struggling financially due to declining enrollments are innovating, investing in technology, and deploying new tactics, such as partnering with local businesses to provide in-demand skills and workforce training, adding more certificate programs, providing non-credit courses, and offering stackable degrees. 

Some of the key findings of the survey include:

Nearly half (45%) of respondents said enrollment had decreased in the past year.

More than half (53%) of respondents were partnering with local businesses to provide in-demand skills training or workforce training.

Nearly two-thirds (64%) of respondents expect to increase their technology spending in the 2023-2024 school year.
