Inside Higher Ed's 2024 Survey of Campus Chief Technology/Information Officers asked CIO/CTOs their thoughts on topics ranging from AI’s impact on college campuses to whether institutions will continue to support online learning. The survey revealed interesting findings, including:

Only 22% of CIO/CTOs are prioritizing AI investments. While excitement for AI is high, few institutions have comprehensive AI policies in place.

Only 17% of CIO/CTOs are confident they can prevent cyberattacks and no one reported being extremely confident.

86% of CIO/CTOs say their colleagues expect adaptable work environments, but only 53% of institutions have policies that actively encourage remote work.

In the 2024 Survey of College and University Presidents, Inside Higher Ed, in partnership with Hanover Research, asked college and university presidents across the country their thoughts on some of higher education’s biggest concerns, including how they feel about artificial intelligence, institutional sustainability, and hybrid work environments. The survey also uncovered what presidents think might be behind the decrease in public confidence in higher education.

16% of presidents say that senior administrators at their institution have had serious internal discussions about merging with another college or university.

50% of presidents are optimistic about artificial intelligence's impact on higher education.

66% of presidents are concerned about the state of public confidence in higher education.

Inside Higher Ed's 2023 Survey of Campus Chief Technology/Information Officers uncovered that artificial intelligence was a top concern, but that institutions were in very different stages of adopting AI technology. The survey also revealed some discrepancies between CIOs and other campus leaders when it came to digitally transforming their campus.

Nearly 4 in 10 CIOs indicate that their institution is in the advanced stages of using generative AI technology for instructional purposes and simple administrative tasks. 

73% of CIOs indicate that they personally believe digital transformation is a “high priority” or “essential” for their institution. 

93% of respondents indicated that, within the last 12 months, their institution has required multi-factor authentication for all employee accounts and updated software to improve cybersecurity practices.

A new survey of higher education leaders developed by University Business and Jenzabar found that many colleges and universities are urgently in need of digital transformation, which is vital to improving student experiences, optimizing decision-making, and ensuring overall institutional sustainability. More than 200 higher education leaders participated in the survey, with a variety of job titles and from a wide diversity of sizes and types of institutions around the country. 

Some of the findings in the survey include:

29% said undergoing modernization and/or digital transformation is incredibly urgent.

54% said improving student recruitment, enrollment, and retention are the most important outcomes for IT systems like the SIS and ERP.

27% said enhanced agility and scalability was the most valuable benefit of leveraging cloud-based systems.

Roughly two-thirds of CIOs believe that their institution has not set specific digital transformation goals.

More than half of CIOs agree that senior administrators treat the central technology unit more like a utility than a strategic partner.

Better salaries and more flexible remote work policies at other organizations are among the top reasons institutions are struggling to retain or hire technology employees.

In our newest online survey of roughly 150 college administrators nationwide, we found that schools struggling financially due to declining enrollments are innovating, investing in technology, and deploying new tactics, such as partnering with local businesses to provide in-demand skills and workforce training, adding more certificate programs, providing non-credit courses, and offering stackable degrees. 

Some of the key findings of the survey include:

Nearly half (45%) of respondents said enrollment had decreased in the past year.

More than half (53%) of respondents were partnering with local businesses to provide in-demand skills training or workforce training.

Nearly two-thirds (64%) of respondents expect to increase their technology spending in the 2023-2024 school year.
